Investigation Ends With Arrest of Treasurer of Local Fire Company

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ – Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer and Point Pleasant Beach Police Chief Robert Kowalewski have announced that Salvatore Umek, 45, of Point Pleasant Beach, has been charged with Theft in relation to his previous role as Treasurer for the Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company Number 2.

The charges follow an investigation conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Economic Crime Squad and the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department.

The investigation revealed that between February 2019 and November 2021, Umek, in his capacity as Treasurer, engaged in unlawful activities. He transferred funds from the fire company’s bank account to pay off personal credit card debt, amounting to approximately $100,000. Umek also transferred money directly into his personal bank account and used the funds for personal benefit.

On July 12, 2023, Umek surrendered himself at the Point Pleasant Beach Police Headquarters. He was processed and served with the charge via summons, pending an upcoming first appearance in Ocean County Superior Court.
