TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is accelerating his gasoline-powered car ban by announcing new rules that will force car manufacturers to build more electric cars and reach a 35% EV mandate in 2026.
Each year, the plan adopted by Murphy will force car makers to increase EV production by 6% annually until 2035, when he expects a 100% ban on the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles.
According to Murphy, the rule will not place any obligations on consumers or car dealerships. However, it is expected to reduce the availability of fuel-consuming cars, specifically targeting light-duty vehicles weighing approximately less than 10,000 pounds.
Opponents have criticized Murphy for ordering a new fleet of gas-guzzling SUVs while ordering manufacturers to reduce the sale of those same vehicles for residents.
He also faced criticism for engaging in political theater by forcing the manufacturer mandate while claiming he is not forcing consumers or dealers to purchase those vehicles.
