BALTIMORE COUNTY, PA – James Shipe Sr., a 70-year-old man, has been arrested and charged by the Baltimore County Police Department’s Special Victims Unit. Shipe is suspected of raping five women in Baltimore County between 1978 and 1986.

His arrest was made possible through the review of past cases and evidence collected under the GBMC Slide Project.

Shipe is currently held at the Baltimore County Detention Center without bond. The Baltimore County Police Department asked anyone with information about other sexual assaults involving suspect Shipe to contact the department at 410-307-2020.

The GBMC Slide Project, initiated by GBMC emergency room physician Dr. Breitenecker in the 1970s, involved the preservation of evidence from sexual assault survivors on microscope slides.

The practice continued until the early 1990s, and the evidence has been vital in solving cold cases. The Baltimore County Police Department’s Special Victims Unit continues to investigate the remaining cases under the GBMC Slide Project.
