Court Enforces Cleanup of Decades-Old Gasoline Spill at Union City Service Center

by Breaking Local News Report

UNION CITY, NJ – The New Jersey Attorney General and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) are taking legal action to enforce two previous DEP orders for the cleanup of a 1990 gasoline spill from Martin Service Center Corporation’s underground storage tanks (USTs) in Union City. The case targets the company’s long-standing non-compliance with DEP orders to remove the USTs and to conduct site cleanup.

Gasoline and its components have contaminated soil and groundwater, posing ongoing threats to public health and the environment. Despite the lapse of over three decades since the initial spill, the site has not been properly remediated, and the underground storage tanks remain in place.

The legal action aims to compel Martin Service Center Corporation to investigate and clean up the contaminated site. It also seeks civil penalties against the company for its failure to comply with past orders. The case is intended to protect the community from potential health risks and environmental hazards associated with the prolonged contamination.
