ELIZABETH, NJ — Juan Abreu-Perez, a resident of Elizabeth, has been sentenced to nine years in state prison for a stabbing attack that seriously injured a victim in January 2022. The announcement was made today by Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel.
On August 14, Abreu-Perez pled guilty to the charge of Aggravated Assault before Union County Superior Judge Daniel Roberts. Judge Roberts mandated that Abreu-Perez serve at least 85% of the nine-year term before becoming eligible for parole.
Elizabeth Police Department patrol units responded to a stabbing report at 7:35 p.m. on January 25, 2022, on South 5th Street. Officers discovered the victim inside her apartment with stab wounds. A swift investigation led to the identification and arrest of Abreu-Perez.
Union County Prosecutor Daniel commended the prompt action of the Elizabeth Police Department, stating, “I want to commend Elizabeth Police Chief Sacca and the extraordinary police response that almost immediately led to the arrest of Juan Abreu-Perez in this case.” Daniel also expressed hope that the sentence would assure the victim’s family and the community that such offenses would not be tolerated.
