WASHINGTON D.C. — After seven weeks of eluding law enforcement, accused murderer Christopher Haynes was apprehended on Thursday, according to the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department.
Haynes, 30, was initially arrested for the murder of Brent Hayward on Aug. 12 and taken into custody by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force on Sept. 6. He was transported to the George Washington University Hospital to receive treatment for reported ankle pain.
During a handcuff switch at the hospital around 3:38 p.m., Haynes assaulted an officer and fled the scene with a handcuff still attached to his right wrist. Despite immediate pursuit by two officers, Haynes successfully evaded capture at the time.
On Thursday, the U.S. Marshal’s Service located Haynes on Iverson Street in Oxon Hill, Maryland, a location 11 miles from the hospital from which he escaped. Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department declined to disclose the details of how they located Haynes.
The capture brings an end to a seven-week manhunt and adds another layer to the criminal charges Haynes will face, including escape from police custody and assault on a law enforcement officer.
