TRENTON, NJ — Ocean Wind 1 and Ocean Wind 2, New Jersey’s initial foray into offshore wind energy, were discontinued on October 31, 2023. The projects faced staunch opposition from a coalition that included New Jersey Republicans, environmentalists, the fishing industry, and shore residents.
Today, Republicans released a video mocking Murphy’s failed initiative.
Governor Phil Murphy had backed the projects, which were part of the state’s strategy to transition to 100% clean energy by 2050. The projects’ discontinuation marks a setback to these clean energy goals. Orsted, the Danish firm spearheading the development, has withdrawn from the initiative, resulting in the termination of the two proposed offshore wind farms.
Ocean Wind 1 was planned to feature 98 wind turbines off the coast of Ocean City, with the capacity to power approximately 500,000 homes. Ocean Wind 2 was expected to provide energy to an additional 500,000 homes. The New Jersey Assembly Republicans commemorated the projects’ end with the release of an “In Memoriam” video, inviting the public to engage with the tribute.
