Illegal Handgun Found During Traffic Investigation

SYRACUSE, NY – Syracuse Police Department reported a seizure of an illegal firearm late last Tuesday night.

During a routine patrol, Officers Mrowinski and Rich observed a vehicle obstructing traffic on Ballantyne Road at approximately 11:49 p.m.

Upon inspection, they found Tavon Simmons, 28, appearing unconscious behind the wheel. A visible handgun on the vehicle’s floorboard prompted immediate action.

The officers managed to detain Simmons after a brief resistance during which he attempted to escape.

He was charged with a slew of crimes, including Criminal Possession of a Firearm and Weapon in the Second Degree, Resisting Arrest, Attempted Escape in the Second Degree, and traffic violations. The confiscated weapon was a silver 9mm SCCY CPx2 handgun loaded with ammunition.
