ORANGE COUNTY, NY – Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced the sentencing of Eric McCollum, 28, of Newburgh, to 15 years in state prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision. McCollum had previously pled guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree.
The incident, occurring on May 28, 2023, at around 1:45 am on Broadway in the City of Newburgh, involved a verbal dispute between McCollum and the victim. During the argument, McCollum stabbed the victim in the torso, piercing his heart, and then fled the scene. Despite immediate medical attention provided by City of Newburgh Police officers, the victim succumbed to his injuries. Detectives later identified and arrested McCollum as the suspect.
District Attorney Hoovler expressed gratitude to the City of Newburgh Police Department for their investigation and arrest. He emphasized the tragic consequences of senseless violence and the pursuit of justice for the victim’s family.
