QUEENS, NY – Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Kassun Brown, 32, has been sentenced to 6-12 years in prison for manslaughter in the death of off-duty NYPD officer Michael Ellis.

The sentencing by Supreme Court Justice Michael Aloise follows Brown’s guilty plea in November to manslaughter in the second degree.

On January 17, 2020, Brown, while intoxicated, ran a stop sign at the intersection of Nashville Boulevard and Lucas Street in St. Albans, colliding with Officer Ellis’s vehicle.

Ellis, a resident of St. Albans and an officer, sustained severe injuries leading to his death on February 27, the day of his 35th birthday. Brown’s blood alcohol content was recorded at .09 percent, exceeding the legal limit of .08 percent.

Brown is concurrently serving a 12-and-a-half-year sentence for a separate drug possession conviction.
