NEWARK, NJ – Two men from Essex County, New Jersey, have been charged with a series of gunpoint robberies targeting gas stations.

Ahmad Singletary, 24, and Joseph Young, 26, both residents of Newark, face multiple charges including Hobbs Act robbery and firearm-related offenses. They made their initial court appearance on January 16.

The robberies occurred in September 2023, with three incidents on September 5 and four on September 12, in Middlesex, Union, and Essex counties.

The defendants reportedly targeted gas stations near highways, using a firearm and executing the robberies quickly. Singletary is also accused of assaulting and injuring victims during some of the robberies.

These charges carry significant potential prison sentences, along with substantial fines. The investigation and subsequent charges were announced by U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.
