Hagerstown Man Arrested in Connection with Fire at Former Poultry Building

HAGERSTOWN, MD – A Hagerstown man was arrested early Tuesday morning following a joint investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal and the Hagerstown Fire Marshal’s Office into a fire at a former poultry building.

Kevin Lee Spielman, 60, faces multiple charges for his alleged role in setting the blaze Sunday evening at the former Snook’s Poultry located at 26 W. Baltimore Street. The fire, reported at approximately 6:30 p.m., required the efforts of around 90 firefighters and several hours to extinguish, resulting in minor injuries to two firefighters.

Investigators utilized surveillance footage to identify Spielman as a suspect, after determining the fire was intentionally set. Efforts to ensure no one was trapped inside involved canines from the Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue Team, confirming the building was empty.

Charges against Spielman include second-degree arson and first-degree malicious burning, among others. Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray highlighted the effective collaboration between state and local fire investigation units in achieving this arrest, praising their commitment to community safety.
