Nijel David Flowers, 25, and Mahogany Na’Jae Hemingway, 21, surrendered to authorities at the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office on Monday.
The couple stands accused of burning an infant with toilet water measuring 129 degrees Fahrenheit, as reported by law enforcement.
Though the incident took place on March 18, Flowers and Hemingway turned themselves in on April 11.
The pair has been charged with unlawful conduct toward a child and are currently detained at the Williamsburg County Detention Center. A police statement posted on Thursday confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
According to local news outlet WCSC, Hemingway revealed to authorities that she had known about the excessively hot toilet water for approximately a year, but no action was taken to rectify the issue. The couple is now being held accountable for endangering their child’s life and safety. Online court records indicate that the case is now docketed in criminal court; however, it remains uncertain if they have legal representation.
