On Sunday, a call came in for an injured seal in Long Branch. The female Grey seal had severe edema in her right front flipper and moderate edema with an open draining wound on her left front flipper.
After a medical examination, it was revealed that the seal had a large infected abscess in her right front flipper that had spread upwards towards her shoulder.
The medical team lanced, drained, and cleaned the abscess and started the seal on oral and topical medications along with pain relief. Weighing 50 lbs, the seal is currently being assist-fed and is resting in Tub 10 of the Quonset Hut in stable but guarded condition due to the serious infection.
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center is currently caring for a total of 16 sick and injured seals in the hospital. Donations to support the rescue and rehabilitation efforts are welcomed
