Newark, NJ – One firefighter was injured and nearly 40 individuals were displaced in Newark following a three-alarm blaze on Monday. The incident occurred at 576 Broadway, where a 3-story, multi-use building with a supermarket and El Kiosko Restaurant and Grill ignited.
Firefighters arrived at the scene at 6:59 p.m., assessing a heavy fire that led to calling a 2nd alarm for more personnel. The fire then spread to nearby occupied establishments, compelling the authorities to escalate to a 3rd alarm.
Ultimately, the fire was contained by 10:10 p.m.
The injured firefighter sustained minor burns on the neck and chest but continued with his duties despite the injuries. In total, 31 adults and 8 children had to be relocated due to the fire. The Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit is currently investigating the cause and origin of the fire. Efforts are being made to determine the circumstances that led to this destructive incident in the city.
