by Local News Report

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Kaleab Berhanu, 21, of Baltimore, has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus 20 years for the murder of 20-year-old Carlos Rashard Carter in Silver Spring on Easter Sunday in 2023.

On Friday, September 20, a judge handed down the sentence for Berhanu, who was convicted of breaking into Carter’s home in the 11800 block of Old Columbia Pike during the early morning of April 9, 2023, and fatally shooting him while he slept.

Carter attempted to flee but collapsed at the feet of his mother and siblings. Despite officers’ efforts to save his life, Carter died at the hospital.

Berhanu was found guilty in March 2024 of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and home invasion, among other charges.
