CUMBERLAND, Md. — Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect captured on video surveillance setting fire to a tire shop early Saturday morning, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
The fire, which occurred at D&K Tires on Greene Street, was reported by a passerby around 4:42 a.m. The Cumberland Fire Department and surrounding crews responded and found flames coming from a window of the two-bay auto repair shop at 638 Greene Street. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to an office area, but the shop sustained significant smoke, soot, and water damage, with losses estimated at $50,000.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage showing the suspect walking down Greene Street from the direction of the Dollar General at approximately 4:30 a.m. The suspect stopped at the side of the building and ignited a flammable device placed on top of a window air conditioning unit before walking away slowly toward Greene Street.
The suspect is described as a white male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a large build. He was wearing loose-fitting pants, possibly sweatpants, and a flannel shirt. Investigators noted that the suspect had an uneven gait, appearing to hobble or walk with a limp.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is urged to contact the Western Regional Office at 301-766-3888 or 301-729-5540.
