ICE arrests Brazilian national in Massachusetts for violence against family member

A Brazilian national accused of domestic assault is now in federal custody after local authorities released him despite ICE’s detainer.

FRAMINGHAM, MASS— U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested a Brazilian national in Framingham after he was charged with assault and battery on a family member, officials announced.

Weliton Pires-Dos Santos, 39, was taken into custody by ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations on Jan. 26, after previously being arrested by local police in November 2023. ICE stated that Pires is unlawfully present in the United States.

Pires was originally apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol near San Luis, Arizona, on Nov. 30, 2021, and was released with a notice to appear in immigration court. Framingham Police arrested him two years later, on Nov. 20, 2023.

ICE lodged an immigration detainer with the Framingham Police Department on the same day as his arrest, but local authorities did not honor it and released Pires from custody.

“Pires victimized a member family and presents a threat to the residents of our Massachusetts communities,” said acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde of ICE Boston.

Pires remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.
