Man shot and killed early Monday morning in Philadelphia

A 31-year-old West Philadelphia man was shot and killed early Monday in Center City as detectives work to determine who was responsible.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A 31-year-old man died Monday morning after being shot in the stomach in the early hours near South Camac Street in the city’s 9th Police District, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:38 a.m. in the 200 block of South Camac Street. The victim, identified as Derwin Darnell Joseph Matthews, Jr., of the 1600 block of North 52nd Street, was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Officers transported Matthews to Jefferson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:20 a.m.

The Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit is leading the investigation. No arrests or suspect information have been released at this time.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive or whether the victim was targeted. The investigation remains active.
