NEWARK, N.J. — A manhunt is active in New Jersey after a riot broke out Thursday night at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Newark, leaving at least four migrant detainees unaccounted for, according to sources and reports.
The chaos erupted at Delaney Hall Detention Facility after anti-ICE protesters gathered outside and tensions escalated. Reports indicate that as many as 50 detainees inside staged a coordinated revolt, overpowering staff and breaking down a wall inside one of the dormitory rooms, NJ.com reported.
During the disorder, several detainees managed to escape their secured areas, leading to an ongoing search for at least four individuals who remain missing. Authorities have not released the identities of the missing detainees.
Itwas at the same faclity where Rep. LaMonica McIver has been indicted in connection with a congressional delegation storming the gates several weeks ago.
Law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal level are now involved in the investigation. ICE, Newark police, and DHS officials are working to determine who organized the attack on the facility.
Security at Delaney Hall has been tightened following the breach, with additional federal agents stationed there. No injuries to staff or detainees have been officially reported as of Friday morning.
Authorities are also reviewing how protesters outside may have coordinated with detainees inside the facility. Multiple arrests from the protest have been reported, though officials have not confirmed the total number.
