MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — A 47-year-old Mechanicsville man has been arrested and charged with arson after allegedly setting fire to his own home early Monday and later admitting to torching his parents’ vehicle over the weekend, officials said.
Michael Robert Guy was taken into custody shortly after firefighters responded to a blaze around 1:00 a.m. at 27099 Morganza Turner Road. Crews arrived to find flames engulfing the home’s attached garage and spreading rapidly. The residence was declared a total loss.

Investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal determined that the fire had been deliberately set and identified Guy as the suspect. He was arrested with assistance from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and taken to the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack.
While being interviewed, Guy also admitted to starting a separate fire two days earlier. Investigators said he confessed to setting fire to his parents’ 2003 Cadillac on Saturday morning near the intersection of Ted Drive and Ted Circle in Avenue. That fire had already been under investigation by fire marshals.

As a result of the investigation, Guy was charged with first- and second-degree arson. He is currently being held without bond at the St. Mary’s County Detention Center.
Officials have not released a possible motive, and no injuries were reported in either fire.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office continues to investigate the incidents with support from local law enforcement.
