BALTIMORE, MD – Authorities have identified the two men killed in a police-involved vehicle collision Wednesday in Baltimore and named the officer involved as the investigation continues.
The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General confirmed that 20-year-old Gabriel Castillo and 22-year-old Ezequiel Eduardo Garcia-Chicas, both of Hyattsville, died in the crash.
Maryland Transportation Authority Police Officer Jamal Cofield, who has served with the department for 11 months, was identified as the officer involved. He is currently assigned to the Central Command Detachment-Patrol.
The Attorney General’s office is requesting the public’s assistance in the investigation. “Anyone with information about this incident, including cell phone or private surveillance video, is asked to contact the IID,” the division stated.
Ongoing investigation and public appeal
Officer Cofield’s status following the incident was not disclosed. It remains unclear whether administrative leave or disciplinary action has been taken during the course of the investigation.
The Independent Investigations Division handles all officer-involved fatalities in Maryland under a statewide mandate to ensure transparency and accountability.
No other injuries have been reported in connection with the collision. The identities of additional witnesses, if any, have not been released.
