BALTIMORE, Md. — A man was fatally shot and an officer wounded during a police-involved shooting Tuesday night near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Laurens Street, according to an official update from the Baltimore Police Department.
At approximately 7:17 p.m. on June 17, officers on patrol approached an adult male believed to be armed. During the encounter, the man pulled a handgun and opened fire, striking one officer in the foot. Three officers returned fire, hitting the suspect.
Both the officer and the suspect were transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The officer, an eight-year veteran of the force, is scheduled to undergo surgery and remains in fair condition. The suspect was pronounced dead at 11:14 p.m.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased.
Investigation ongoing by multiple agencies
The Baltimore Police Department’s Special Investigations Response Team (SIRT), along with the Homicide Section and the Maryland Office of the Attorney General, are investigating the incident. The department will release body-worn camera footage in accordance with its Critical Incident Recordings Policy.
