Owings, MD – A stolen car pursuit through Calvert County ended in a violent crash Sunday evening when a Kia Optima slammed into a residence after striking a telephone pole and cutting through a yard, authorities said.
The chase began around 5:59 p.m. when deputies were alerted to a stolen white Kia Optima from Prince George’s County traveling on MD Route 260. Deputy MacWilliams spotted the vehicle, but when law enforcement closed in, the driver sped off, passing cars on the shoulder and driving recklessly.
Deputies activated lights and sirens, but the vehicle refused to stop. The pursuit continued onto Mt. Harmony Road, where Stop Sticks were deployed. The driver swerved toward officers and kept going, deputies said. Moments later, the vehicle failed to negotiate a turn near Alyssa Way, smashed into a telephone pole, barreled through a yard, and collided with a house.
Four juveniles were inside the car. Three were injured in the crash, while one fled into nearby woods. Deputies used K9 units, drone support, and additional personnel to track down the fleeing suspect, who was taken into custody without incident.
The driver was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to a trauma center in critical condition. Two other occupants were transported by ground to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The fourth juvenile was uninjured.
The Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division was notified but declined to investigate, citing state law.
