Man with knife and screwdriver shot dead by DC officer during Reservoir Road standoff
WASHINGTON, DC – A man armed with a knife and a screwdriver was fatally shot by a Metropolitan Police officer after a tense confrontation inside a Northwest D.C. home tied to a civil protection order.
Kevin Booker, 41, of Northwest, D.C., was shot Friday evening after he allegedly lunged at officers with the weapons during a prolonged standoff at a residence on the 4400 block of Reservoir Road. Officers had responded to a triggered residential alarm and knew Booker was the subject of a standing Civil Protection Order at the address.
Police arrived at around 6:47 p.m. and spent over 20 minutes issuing loud verbal commands for Booker to exit the property. When those efforts failed, officers entered the home through an unlocked door and continued to clear the residence while attempting contact.
According to the preliminary investigation, as officers cleared the second floor, Booker allegedly rushed at them while holding a knife and a screwdriver. One officer fired at Booker, striking him.

Officers rendered aid and called DC Fire and EMS, but Booker was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital after life-saving measures were unsuccessful. Police later recovered the knife and screwdriver from the scene.
The shooting remains under investigation by the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigations Team and will also be independently reviewed by the United States Attorney’s Office. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with MPD policy.
Booker had been arrested just one day prior for allegedly violating the same Civil Protection Order tied to the home. The order had been issued on October 30 following an earlier complaint by a resident at the property.
Body-worn camera footage from the incident will be released in compliance with D.C. law.
