Coffee stop turns into jackpot win for Montgomery retiree

Lottery winner - a big pile of money,

Coffee run lands Montgomery County woman a $57K FAST PLAY jackpot win

Silver Spring, MD – A Montgomery County woman walked into a Safeway for her morning coffee and walked out with a $57,486 surprise thanks to a spur-of-the-moment decision to play FAST PLAY at her son’s suggestion.

The retired woman usually sticks to Pick 3 and Pick 4, but on November 25, her son encouraged her to try something different. She bought $10 worth of FAST PLAY tickets from a Lottery vending machine inside the Safeway at 15411 New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring — and hit the progressive jackpot with a $2 ticket in the 7-11-21 game.

The winning combination came on Game 7 of the ticket, where all three numbers totaled 21 — triggering the top prize.

Not immediately realizing the win, she had her son scan the ticket. He initially believed it returned an error, but a closer look revealed the message: “Take to lottery.” That’s when the excitement hit.

She claimed her $57,486 jackpot the next day at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. While she hasn’t decided what to do with the winnings yet, she’s known to enjoy gardening and spending time outdoors in her retirement.

The Safeway store will also receive a $574 retailer bonus for selling the jackpot-winning FAST PLAY ticket.
