Failed robbery in DC ends with suspect on the ground
WASHINGTON, DC — A man attempting to rob a business on Marion Barry Avenue in Southeast Washington ended up in handcuffs after the victim physically detained him until police arrived Saturday evening.
The attempted robbery happened just after 5 p.m. on Saturday, when a man entered a commercial establishment in the 1700 block of Marion Barry Avenue and allegedly took cash directly from the register. Before he could escape, the victim intervened and held the suspect at the scene until officers from the Sixth District arrived.
Responding officers took 40-year-old Corey Bender, of Southeast DC, into custody without further incident. Bender was arrested and charged with robbery following the on-scene investigation.
The business was not publicly identified, and there were no reported injuries related to the incident.
The robbery took place in a busy corridor of Southeast, where businesses are typically active during weekend evening hours. Police have not released additional details regarding the amount of money taken or recovered.
