Watch: New Jersey Cop Guilty for Breaking Into Ex-Boyfriend’s Home, Threatens to Burn Down House

TOMS RIVER, NJ – An off-duty Toms River police officer who smashed her way into her ex-boyfriend’s home has been permanently barred from law enforcement after entering a guilty plea. Rebecca Sayegh, 32, admitted to burglary, criminal mischief, and simple assault on Nov. 17.

The charges trace back to a late-night break-in at a Berkeley Township residence in April.

Prosecutors said Sayegh agreed to forfeit her police job and all future public employment in New Jersey as part of the plea.

At one point during her arrest, Sayegh threatened to burn down a responding officer’s home.

“I’m going f-cking burn your house down next,” she shouted at the officer.

Police career forfeited under plea agreement

Sayegh had been suspended without pay prior to entering the plea before Judge Guy P. Ryan. Prosecutors said they will seek 180 days in the Ocean County Jail as a condition of probation when she is sentenced on Jan. 16, along with restitution and a no-contact order.

Berkeley Township officers were called to the Evernhan Avenue home at 11:20 p.m. on Apr. 25 for a reported disturbance. Responding officers discovered the front glass door had been smashed.
Investigators determined Sayegh forced her way into the home during the incident.

Damage to home and vehicle detailed in investigation

Authorities said Sayegh also damaged the hood of a vehicle belonging to one of the victims that was parked in the driveway.

She was taken into custody at the scene after resisting attempts to place her under arrest. Following her arrest, she was released under New Jersey’s bail reform guidelines. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office credited its staff along with Berkeley Township and Toms River police for their work on the case.

Sayegh’s sentencing will determine the final conditions of her probation and restitution requirements.
