Boston police say weeks-long investigation led detectives to suspect accused in violent early morning attack
BOSTON, Mass. — A Quincy man has been arrested in connection with a violent Dorchester home invasion that left two victims seriously injured and bleeding heavily inside an apartment during a terrifying overnight attack, Boston police said Friday.
Officers assigned to District B-3 arrested 43-year-old Robert Rutledge on May 15 following a weeks-long investigation tied to the April 20 assault at 40 Stratton Street in Dorchester, according to the Boston Police Department.
Police originally responded around 2:49 a.m. to reports of an assault and battery in progress at the residence.
When officers arrived, they found one victim suffering from severe facial injuries and bleeding heavily.
A second victim was discovered inside the apartment with a head injury and was unable to stand without assistance, police said.
Boston EMS transported both victims to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Investigators said detectives spent weeks reviewing surveillance footage from multiple cameras in the surrounding neighborhood.
According to police, the footage and additional evidence helped identify the suspect and track his movements after the attack.
A District B-3 detective later secured an arrest warrant from Dorchester District Court.
Police said officers encountered Rutledge Friday morning while responding to a drug investigation call at 247 Woodrow Avenue in Dorchester.
Rutledge was taken into custody, transported to a local hospital and later booked at Nashua Street Jail.
He is expected to face charges including home invasion, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person 65 or older.
Authorities said Rutledge also faces outstanding warrants from Brockton District Court and Dorchester District Court.
During the investigation, a second individual was summonsed on a separate drug-related charge.
