TOMS RIVER, NJ – A new scam surfaced in Toms River on October 19, where individuals reported receiving fraudulent phone calls from scammers impersonating local law enforcement.
The con artists, masquerading as Toms River Police officers, utilized the department’s phone number and real officers’ names to deceive the residents. They informed the victims of purported arrest warrants against them, insisting on immediate payment of cash bail at an undisclosed location, diverging from the legitimate process at the Toms River Police Department.
The Toms River Police Department has alerted the community, emphasizing that no legitimate law enforcement agency in the state would request cash payments in person, over the phone, or through digital channels. They advised residents to disconnect such calls immediately and report the incident by dialing 9-1-1.
The police also warned against using contact details provided by the scammers or succumbing to their pressure tactics.
