Ashland gas station sells $1 million winning scratch-off

Gas station scratcher in Ashland turns Caroline County man into million dollar winner

ASHLAND, VA — A routine stop at a convenience store in Ashland ended with a Caroline County man uncovering a $1 million top prize on a Virginia Lottery scratcher and choosing to take the lump sum payout.

The anonymous winner purchased a ticket from The Big Ticket Cold Hard Cash game at the Shop N Drive, 10292 E. Patrick Henry Road. After scratching the ticket, he realized he had matched the game’s $1 million top prize.

Virginia law allows winners of $1 million or more to remain anonymous, and the Lottery did not release his identity.

The winner had the option of receiving the full $1 million over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $476,000 before taxes. He selected the cash option.

He told Lottery officials he plans to use the winnings to purchase a vehicle and invest a portion of the money. He also indicated he may start a business.

The Big Ticket Cold Hard Cash scratcher features prizes ranging from $20 to $1 million. This marks the second top prize claimed in the game, leaving one $1 million prize still unclaimed. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 720,000, and the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 2.93.

All Virginia Lottery profits support K-12 education across the Commonwealth. Caroline County received more than $4.4 million in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year. In Fiscal Year 2025, the Lottery generated more than $901 million for K-12 education, accounting for approximately 10 percent of the state’s total K-12 school budget.

For one Caroline County resident, a single scratch at an Ashland gas station has now delivered a $1 million payday.
