Fort McHenry scare ends safely as explosive device removed without incident

Baltimore, MD – A reported explosive device discovered Thursday at Fort McHenry prompted a swift and coordinated response from local and federal agencies, ending safely after the item was removed for further investigation.

Members of the Baltimore Police Department’s Hazardous Device Team responded to the historic site following reports of a potential explosive. The team worked in close coordination with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and U.S. Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians to secure the area and evaluate the threat.

Crews temporarily shut off gas in the vicinity as a precaution and rendered the device safe on site. A controlled operation created a loud noise but did not result in any injuries or damage.

The device was removed from the location for continued observation and analysis. Officials have confirmed there is no active threat to the public. All safety protocols have now been lifted, though the public is still asked to avoid the area until operations are fully completed.

The investigation is ongoing and federal partners are expected to continue reviewing the device and its origin.
