Car crashes into cemetery strikes gravestones in Wall Township

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A car barreled through the entrance of St. Catharine’s Cemetery Sunday night, striking gravestones and causing significant property damage, according to local police.

The crash occurred around 7:17 p.m. at 1100 West Chicago Blvd when a northbound vehicle on Village Road crossed the intersection and veered off the roadway into the cemetery grounds, the Wall Township Police Department said Monday.

The vehicle struck a curb, the cemetery’s entrance sign, and several gravestones before coming to a stop. Police said the driver, a 40-year-old male from Wall Township, was the only person in the car.

Emergency Medical Services evaluated the driver at the scene, but he declined further medical treatment.

The vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage, and all airbags deployed during the crash. It was later towed from the cemetery.

Police issued the driver multiple traffic summonses. His identity was not released.

The crash remains under investigation by the Wall Township Police Department.
