CUMBERLAND, Md. — A 59-year-old man was arrested on Monday after allegedly assaulting another man with a makeshift weapon during an argument over money, according to the Cumberland Police Department.
Officers responded to a report of an assault at the parklet near North Centre Street and Frederick Street, where they found a male victim with facial injuries. The victim informed police that the suspect, whom he identified as “Jerry,” struck him in the face with a rock placed inside a sock. The suspect fled the scene, leaving the weapon behind, the victim told police.
Shortly afterward, officers located a man matching the description given by the victim. Police identified him as Gerald Michael Sassano of Cumberland. Sassano admitted to being involved in the altercation, authorities said, leading to his arrest.
Sassano was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, carrying a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct. He was transported to Central Booking and later taken before a District Court Commissioner, who set his bond at $2,500. Sassano is currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center.
