CUMBERLAND, Md. — An 18-year-old Cumberland man faces multiple firearm charges after police say a handgun was fired into the Potomac River over the weekend.
The Cumberland Police Department responded Saturday, Aug. 29, to the Canal Street area after receiving a report of a gunshot. Officers located people believed to be involved nearby and identified Che’ Anthony Howard Jr., according to a department press release.
During the investigation, officers located a handgun and determined the weapon had been fired into the Potomac River, police said.
- Howard was arrested Sunday, Aug. 30.
- Police said a handgun was recovered during the investigation.
- He was being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.
Police applied for charges, and a warrant was issued for Howard. Officers located and arrested him Sunday.
Howard, of Cumberland, is charged with unlawful firearm possession, altering a firearm serial number, carrying a handgun, carrying a loaded handgun, reckless engagement and disorderly conduct.
He was taken to the Allegany County Detention Center and held without bond pending trial. The charges are allegations, and Howard is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
