WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to a series of brazen vehicle thefts targeting construction sites, the D.C. Metro Police Department is reaching out to the public for assistance in identifying suspects captured on surveillance footage in Northwest and Northeast D.C.
On Thursday at approximately 12:44 p.m., officers responded to a theft from an auto offense in the 3800 block of Brandywine Street, Northwest. The victim reported seeing suspects inside a construction vehicle, one of whom threatened the victim with a pipe. The suspects fled with stolen property.
Around 1:29 p.m., another theft occurred in the 1900 block of Brentwood Road, Northeast, where suspects forcibly entered a construction vehicle. One suspect threatened the victim with a firearm before fleeing with property. Both victims were unharmed.
On Friday at 9:45 a.m., suspects broke into a construction vehicle in the 1000 block of New Jersey Avenue, Southeast, taking property. Later, at 10:15 a.m., four suspects attempted but failed to access another vehicle at 13th and D Streets Southeast.
At 12:45 p.m., officers responded to the 3200 block of Grace Street, Northwest, where suspects entered an unoccupied construction vehicle and stole property.
Surveillance cameras captured images of two suspects and their vehicle in each incident. Police are urging anyone with information to contact them at (202) 727-9099 or text tips to 50411. A reward of up to $1,000 is offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment.
The Metropolitan Police Department reports an increase in thefts targeting construction vehicles for equipment. Community outreach teams are visiting construction sites to remind crews to secure their vehicles and keep valuables out of sight.
