Bergen County prosecutors say a Garfield man has been charged after an investigation into the alleged assault of three juveniles, including one child who suffered significant bodily injury.
A Garfield man has been charged with multiple offenses after authorities alleged he assaulted and endangered three children at a residence in Fairview earlier this month.
Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced that Paul J. Gomez, 40, was arrested following a joint investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the Fairview Police Department.
According to prosecutors, the investigation began after the New Jersey Division of Child Protection & Permanency contacted the Prosecutor’s Office on June 21 regarding allegations of physical abuse involving three juveniles.
Investigation led to multiple charges
Authorities said investigators determined that Gomez allegedly assaulted and endangered three juveniles on June 16 at a residence in Fairview.
Prosecutors allege that one of the children sustained significant bodily injury during the incident.
As a result of the investigation, Gomez was arrested June 23 in Paramus.
Defendant released pending court proceedings
Gomez was charged with three counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, one count of third-degree aggravated assault, and two counts of simple assault.
Following his arrest, Gomez was remanded to the Bergen County Jail, appeared in Bergen County Superior Court, and was later released pending further court proceedings.
“The charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt,” Prosecutor Musella said.
Musella also thanked the Fairview Police Department and the New Jersey Division of Child Protection & Permanency for their assistance during the investigation.
