50K scratch off win puts new home dream within reach for Montgomery County man

Boyds, MD – A casual stop for gas and a last-minute change in lottery choice turned into a major financial boost for a Montgomery County mechanic who says a $50,000 scratch-off win has put a new house on the horizon.

Zachary Drennan of Boyds claimed the $50,000 prize Monday after scratching a winning ticket from the Maryland Lottery’s 50X the Cash game. Drennan said he bought the $10 ticket on Friday, January 30, during what he described as an on day for playing the Lottery.

Drennan told Lottery officials he plays sporadically, sometimes buying a few tickets a week and then going weeks without playing at all. On this occasion, he stopped with a fellow mechanic at Crystal Rock Exxon on Germantown Road. He initially planned to buy a game he had played before, but his coworker suggested trying 50X the Cash, a game that launched earlier in January.

The two scratched their tickets at the gas station. Before Drennan’s friend finished scratching his own ticket, Drennan realized he had uncovered a $50,000 prize. The moment sent him rushing to secure the ticket and figure out the next steps.

Crystal Rock Exxon, located at 19815 Germantown Road in Germantown, sold the winning ticket. The game launched January 9 with nine top prizes of $100,000 and ten second-tier prizes of $50,000. At the time of the claim, eight $100,000 prizes and nine $50,000 prizes remained in circulation.

Drennan said the winnings will be used to start a fund toward buying a new home for his family, calling the prize a significant step toward that goal.
