Howell man injured after cellphone explodes in his hand

HOWELL, N.J. – A Howell resident suffered burns Thursday evening after his cellphone exploded while he was holding it, authorities said. The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. inside the man’s home. It remains unclear whether the phone was being charged at the time of the explosion.

The blast caused burns to the man’s hand and also scorched a section of carpet in the home, officials said. Lakewood EMS responded to the scene and treated the victim for burn injuries.

Police have launched an investigation to determine what caused the phone to ignite.
