Man and his pet dead after Valentine’s Day house explosion in Chestertown

CHESTERTOWN, MD – A powerful house explosion that erupted on Valentine’s Day evening left one person unaccounted for and a home in ruins as investigators combed through debris late into the night.

According to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the blast occurred around 6 p.m. on February 14 in the 6900 block of Pentridge Lane. Fire crews from the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company and surrounding departments responded within minutes to find the residence fully engulfed in flames and partially collapsed.

Six people were inside the home at the time of the explosion. Five managed to escape, while a sixth individual remains missing.

A 68-year-old man and his pet were killed in the blast.

Evidence points to gas-related explosion

Deputy State Fire Marshals, along with K9 Deacon, are leading the investigation. Early findings suggest signs consistent with a gas-related cause, though the official origin remains under review. Heavy equipment, including excavators, has been brought in to remove debris and allow investigators to safely search the site.
