Manchester man charged with vehicular homicide after fatal crash in Toms River

Prosecutors say driver was impaired when head-on collision killed Freehold woman

Toms River, NJ — A 37-year-old Freehold woman was killed in a head-on crash in Toms River, leading to vehicular homicide charges against a Manchester man after authorities determined he was impaired, prosecutors said.

Daniel Cormier, 31, was charged April 13, 2026, with vehicular homicide and strict liability vehicular homicide in connection with the March 7 crash that killed Shamirah Nolan, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

Fatal crash on Lakewood Road

The collision occurred around 11:05 p.m. near the intersection of Lakewood Road and Whitty Road, where police responded to reports of a serious crash.

Investigators said Cormier was driving a Volkswagen Jetta southbound when the vehicle struck a guardrail, lost control, and crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a Honda Accord driven by Nolan.

Nolan was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where she was pronounced dead. Cormier was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

Blood test results lead to charges

Authorities at the scene observed signs that Cormier appeared impaired, prompting a court-authorized blood draw at the hospital.

Laboratory results received April 13 showed Cormier had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.09, above New Jersey’s legal limit of 0.08, prosecutors said.

Investigators also found Gabapentin and Hydrocodone in his system, which authorities said rendered him unfit to operate a vehicle.
