Maryland man’s scratch off surprise turns into $100K jackpot

A Middle River man thought a winning lottery ticket had to be a misprint before discovering he had really won $100,000.

BALTIMORE, Md. — A Middle River man is celebrating a $100,000 Maryland Lottery Scratch-Off prize after initially believing the winning ticket had to be a mistake.

The winner told Maryland Lottery officials he enjoys playing Scratch-Off games because of the chance to win big, but nothing prepared him for what he saw when he scratched his 50X the Cash ticket.

“I was confused when I saw the ticket. I thought it must be a misprint!” he said while claiming his prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Royal Farms located at 12545 Eastern Avenue in Dundalk.

The winner said he took the ticket home before scratching it and was convinced he was looking at a $100 prize instead of the $100,000 prize displayed on the ticket.

“My brain said $100,000, but I thought, it must be $100. This can’t be real,” he recalled.

He called his wife with only one message: “We need to talk.”

According to the winner, his wife initially feared he was calling with bad news. He assured her it was good news but waited until they were together to reveal the six-figure prize.

The couple said they plan to save the money and discuss investment options rather than spending the windfall.

The $10 50X the Cash Scratch-Off launched earlier this year with nine top prizes of $100,000. Following this win, two top prizes remain, along with five $50,000 prizes.

Royal Farms will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
