Maryland state prison inmate killed; homicide investigation underway

JESSUP, Md. — Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a state prison inmate at Jessup Correctional Institution, which has been ruled a homicide, authorities said Tuesday.

The victim, identified as 61-year-old Warren Michael Griffin, was pronounced dead at the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center. He had been serving time at the Jessup facility in Anne Arundel County.

Investigators have identified a suspect, also an inmate, but have not released his name pending formal charges.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit launched its investigation on Feb. 21 after being contacted by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined Griffin’s death was a homicide.

Authorities have not disclosed details about how Griffin was killed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
