Moped mob attack leaves Maryland teen seriously injured near high school

Group of 20 riders accused in violent daytime assault near Rockville school

ROCKVILLE, Md. — A juvenile male was seriously injured after police said he was attacked by a large group of moped riders near a Rockville intersection close to a local high school Thursday afternoon.

Rockville City Police said officers responded around 11:52 a.m. to the area of Wootton Parkway and Rockshire Place for reports of an assault in progress.

When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from serious injuries.

The juvenile was transported to a local hospital and is currently recovering, according to police.

Investigators said witnesses reported that approximately 20 males riding mopeds assaulted the victim using a blunt object before fleeing the area.

Police said detectives believe the suspects are from outside the City of Rockville.

Authorities noted the incident happened near Wootton High School but stressed there is no evidence the assault was connected to the school or involved any students.

Officials said a Rockville police officer was already assigned to Wootton High School at the time of the attack and responded immediately because of the close proximity.

Police also emphasized there was no threat to students or staff at the school.

Investigators said the victim has so far been unable to confirm the circumstances surrounding the assault and has not cooperated with detectives.

The investigation remains active.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Rockville City Police. Witnesses may remain anonymous.
