Muslim Rights Group Urges Gov. Murphy to Pass Immigrant Trust Act to Counter Trump Deportations

January 17, 2025

TRENTON, NJ — The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ) is calling on Governor Phil Murphy to urgently pass the Immigrant Trust Act to protect the state’s immigrant communities from potential federal crackdowns.

CAIR-NJ raised concerns about the incoming Trump administration’s stated intentions to implement mass deportations and detainments, warning that immigrant families across New Jersey are at significant risk.

“Protecting immigrants is not just an act of justice—but a necessity for preserving the diverse fabric of our communities,” said Nancy Elbassiouny, Government Affairs Manager at CAIR-NJ. “Gov. Murphy has the opportunity to lead by example and protect those most vulnerable to these harmful policies.”

The Immigrant Trust Act would prevent state and local law enforcement from using resources to enforce federal immigration laws, aiming to strengthen trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement agencies.

Governor Murphy recently reaffirmed his commitment to defending New Jersey’s values during his State of the State address, but CAIR-NJ is urging immediate legislative action as federal immigration threats intensify.

CAIR-NJ’s call to action highlights growing anxiety among immigrant communities as federal proposals for workplace raids, mass detentions, and changes to birthright citizenship gain momentum.
