LATHAM, N.Y. — New York National Guard soldiers are deploying to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to assist with securing the migrant operations center, military officials announced.
A send-off ceremony was held at Shaker High School in Latham, attended by Army Maj. Gen. Ray Shields, the adjutant general of New York, and other Guard leaders. The soldiers will first undergo three weeks of additional training at Fort Bliss, Texas, before arriving at their mission site.
“Deployments are never easy, and for some, this may be your first time away from your loved ones, but remember, you’re not alone,” said Army Brig. Gen. Isabel Rivera Smith, commander of the 53rd Troop Command. “You carry with you the support and love of your families, friends, leadership, and this entire community.”
Company Executive Officer Army 1st Lt. Olano Gayle emphasized the extensive training the soldiers have undergone to prepare for the mission, stating they will rely on their skills, courage, and resilience in the months ahead.
Shields addressed the troops during the ceremony, recognizing some soldiers with challenge coins for their preparation efforts. Family members were also thanked for their continued support during pre-mobilization training.
