Newark Man Sentenced to Nine Years for Robbing Amazon Driver in Linden

LINDEN, NJ – A Newark man has been sentenced to nine years in state prison for his role in the daytime robbery of an Amazon delivery driver in June 2023. Anthony Torres, 24, received the sentence for second-degree robbery on November 15, 2024, from Union County Superior Court Judge Daniel Roberts. Torres will be required to serve at least 85% of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

The incident occurred on June 7, 2023, at approximately 3:00 p.m. when police responded to a report of a robbery in the parking lot of Jersey Lanes, located at 30 N. Park Ave. The Amazon driver reported that while parked for a break, Torres reached through the open side door of the delivery van and stole his backpack. When the driver exited the van and confronted Torres, grabbing his shirt, Torres struck the driver multiple times. As Torres fled the scene in a vehicle, the driver was struck and suffered minor injuries.

“There is absolutely no place for violent crimes like this in our community,” said Linden Police Chief David Hart. He also commended the Union County Prosecutor’s Office and the responding officers and detectives for their work in securing the extended sentence.
