Surveillance images show several individuals wanted after a robbery escalated into gunfire during an early morning attack, police said.

NEWARK, N.J. — An early morning robbery turned violent when shots were fired at a victim during an assault, and Newark police are now asking for the public’s help identifying several individuals captured on surveillance cameras.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred at approximately 4:06 a.m. on April 4 in the 30 block of Empire Street after the city’s ShotSpotter gunfire detection system alerted officers to the area.

When officers arrived, they recovered eight shell casings and met with a victim who reported being assaulted and robbed. The victim was not struck by the gunfire.

According to police, the victim was searching for his wallet when a man approached and demanded property. After the victim refused and attempted to run away, several other individuals allegedly attacked him by punching and kicking him.

During the assault, police said one suspect stole the victim’s key fob while another suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and fired at the victim, missing him.

The Newark Department of Public Safety has released surveillance images of several individuals believed to be connected to the incident and is asking anyone who recognizes them to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newark Police Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). Anonymous tips may also be submitted through the Newark Police Division website.

The investigation remains ongoing.
