Quick stop after nails unleashes six figure payday

Pedicure pit stop turns into $250000 jackpot shock for Upper Marlboro mom

BALTIMORE, MD — What began as a routine nail appointment ended in a six-figure surprise after an Upper Marlboro woman stopped next door for scratch-offs and walked away with a $250,000 Maryland Lottery win.

The Prince George’s County resident claimed the prize Monday at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. She told officials that buying tickets has become part of her nail salon routine.

Whenever she gets her nails done, she stops at the neighboring liquor store to play her address on Pick 3 and occasionally purchase scratch-offs. On her latest visit, she had a pedicure appointment and decided to buy three $10 scratch-off tickets.

Two of the tickets produced small wins of $10 and $15. Using those winnings, she purchased a $10 Money Bags scratch-off ticket. After scratching the ticket, she saw a message that read Congratulations along with the number 250000.

She said she initially believed the number was a code rather than a prize amount.

A store clerk she knew offered to scan the ticket to confirm the result. The clerk informed her that she had won $250,000.

The winning ticket was purchased at Bill’s Wine and Liquor, 7431 Annapolis Road in Hyattsville. The retailer will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the top-prize ticket.

Lottery officials said one $250,000 top prize remains unclaimed in the Money Bags game.

The winner said she plans to use the money to eliminate debt for herself and her daughter, along with a celebratory dinner and a future trip.

For one Upper Marlboro mother, a routine stop for a scratch-off between salon visits has now turned into a $250,000 payday.
