Retired Maryland postman stumbles on $100K Powerball win

Retired postman hits $100K Powerball jackpot with forgotten ticket

Camp Springs, MD – A retired postal worker from Prince George’s County delivered his own good news this month after uncovering a $100,000 Powerball prize from a ticket he’d tucked away for weeks without checking.

The lucky winner, who chose to remain anonymous, purchased a single quick pick Powerball ticket for the August 6 drawing at Eastover Liquors, located at 4585 Telfair Boulevard in Camp Springs. The $2 ticket became a $3 play when he added the Power Play option — a decision that doubled his third-tier prize from $50,000 to $100,000.

The winning numbers matched four of the five white balls and the red Powerball, netting him the boosted six-figure prize. Despite the win, the retired player didn’t immediately realize his stroke of luck. He waited until October 21 to scan the ticket using a smartphone, only then discovering the jackpot-level news.

The Maryland Lottery confirmed that the man had previously claimed a Pick 5 prize but noted this Powerball win is his largest to date. The longtime player said he plans to use the money to take a well-earned vacation and pay down outstanding bills.

The Aug. 6 Powerball drawing featured a jackpot worth hundreds of millions, but the quick pick ticket from Camp Springs stood out for its significant third-tier return — proving that a single ticket and a $1 Power Play add-on can still make a major difference.

Eastover Liquors, where the ticket was sold, will receive a retailer bonus for its role in the win.
